A hop and a skip from the cold, dark days of March and we're at May Day. The days are glorious at the moment though the nights are still cool. Everything is blooming, from the magnificence of magnolia to the abundance of bluebells, while the blossom and roses offer a promise of the later glory to come. It's a time to stop and admire as much as to maintain...but not for too long as the grass never stops growing.
I work in West Oxfordshire as a gardener, helping with general maintenance and upkeep, be that weeding, pruning, tidying, planting or any number of tasks.
Gardening is a pleasure, despite the attentions of vengeful bees, assaults by spiteful roses and the mercurial nature of the British climate. A well-tended compost bin, a nicely manicured hedge, a properly mowed lawn or a tidy bed offer small moments of pleasure and a hot flask of Kenya tea makes any day worthwhile - weather permitting.
